HIRSUTE LAUNCH SEARCH FOR MOUSTACHE OF THE YEAR

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, which campaigns against beardism, irrational prejudice against the hirsute, has said that after the increasingly high profile of Movember it has decided to launch a Moustache of the Year Award to go alongside its long established Beard of the Year Award at the end of December.

After detailed research the campaign group has come up with a shortlist of people who currently have distinguished moustaches which add gravitas to their public persona..

The list is now open to public vote with the result announced on Sunday December 1st

Moustache of the Year Shortlist

Orlando Bloom, actor

Bruce Forsyth, Strictly MC

Merv Hughes, ex Australian cricketer

Brad Pitt, actor

Burt Reynolds, actor

Ian Rush, former Liverpool FC player

Ted Turner, CNN

Michael White, Guardian political journalist

The BLF says that the criteria for the shortlist has proved particularly tricky. Many of those who feature as prominent in the moustache world are sadly either no longer with us or in fact have beards as well as moustaches. We have focused on candidates where the moustache is the predominant element of their facial hair. We have also excluded the kind of absurd hair topiary associated with the self styled World Beard and Moustache Championships. The Award is about impact and gravitas not how silly you can look in public.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said We feel the increasing impact of Movember warrants a separate Award for Moustache of the Year. The competition is certain to bristle and it will be interesting to see whose moustache is judged to add the most gravitas
