  1. You seem to forget that K Marx (who had a beard) drank in the Museum Tavern and went on regular pub crawls on Tottenham Court Road with Fred Engels (who also had a beard).

  2. Well remembered Roger. We shall visit the Museum Tavern soon…first went there with Cec aka John Simpson who also has a beard.

  3. Somewhat belated, according to Travis Elborough in his shortened presentation on Walk in the Park Saturday, it was the unwashed and unshaved squaddies (of all ranks) during the Crimean War that set off a fashion craze for beards, and no wizened wonders there and then for the leading lights of the later Victorian establishment ……. So pretty well anyone male of a certain class and style of that era would have been well-bearded inside or outside most taverns. Which book, BTW, I heartly recommend as an excellent long term read. The only real criticism is the lack of an index.
