Campaigners slam beard ban by construction contractor Mears

Safety masks for the hirsute are easily available

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers which campaigns against beardism, has slammed a ban on beards by UK construction contractor Mears.

Mears claim that those working in dusty environments must be clean shaven otherwise protective masks will not work properly.

Construction workers union Unite has already taken the issue up.

The campaigners say that masks are available that mean workers can work in dusty environments quite safely but that these cost more than a basic dust mask.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, the reality is that someone in a senior position is a pogonophobe and has decided to ban beards. In many US States such a ban would be viewed as discriminatory and hence illegal. In the UK that is unlikely to be the case. We are calling on Jeremy Corbyn to make it clear he will act on this if elected on June 8th
