Cricketer Moeen Ali joins race for Beard of Spring after match winning performance

The Beard Liberation Front, the network of beard wearers that campaigns against beardism, irrational prejudice against the hirsute, has said that England cricketer Moeen Ali is a late entrant to the Beard of Spring 2016 poll after a match winning performance against Afghanistan in the World Twenty20 competition in India on Wednesday.

Moeen scored 41 not out to rescue England after it looked like they would be bowled out for less than a 100. In the Afganistan innings he also took a wicket for 17 runs in two overs underlining an excellent all round performance driven in part by his well-known beard power

Polling is in progress on-line with the result announced, as is traditional, on Easter Saturday.

The front runner is Lord Falconer who is rumoured to have renounced his clean shaven New Labour past for the hirsuteness of the Corbyn era but after his performance today Moeen could be set to shave the opposition.

The Award, one of four seasonal hirsute accolades that leads to the Beard of the Year in December, celebrates the coming of Spring and the growth of beards new and old.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said Moeen’s beard power won for England on the cricket field, the issue now is whether his beard can triumph in the Spring poll
