Campaigners say continuing currency of fake news ‘poo in beards’ story shows media pogonophobia

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers which campaigns against beardism, irrational prejudice against the hirsute, has said that the continued currency of a story on-line that men’s beards have traces of faeces underlines how pogonophobic much of the media is

A similar story surfaced in 2015 and is fully debunked here:

The campaigners say that on this occasion the story originated from a company that markets beard grooming products. While it quotes research apparently done at Manchester Metropolitan University there is no link to the research findings or evidence that the research has been published

The story has since appeared in the Huffington Post and in the Sun, although the coverage on the latter site was unusually balanced

BLF organiser Keith Flett said, the ‘poo in beards’ story is driven by two things. Firstly a commercial interest and secondly pogonophobia. The fact that it continues to appear underlines that a good deal of the media is happy to promote anti-beard stories without even checking if they are true
