Denis Thatcher, Peter Alliss, golf, gin & my walk on role

I’m not usually one to praise Mrs Thatcher but the Thatcher Foundation which has been making the great leader’s archive available on-line does deserve praise.

Just published is the guest list for the victory celebration after the 1987 General Election. This was vetted by Denis Thatcher. Seb Coe got a question mark but golfer (now BBC golf commentator) Peter Alliss got 3 ticks.

No real surprise. Still back in the day when I was a junior officer for the then Society of Telecom Executives (before I descended to more senior roles) the union had a field office in  a block on Victoria St in central London. Another occupant was Denis Thatcher. Bumping into him departing with a bag of golf clubs was not exactly unknown.

The gin link is via the late John Wells Denis Thatcher diaries in Private Eye.
