Tony Benn’s warning on the impact of Brazil beating England in the World Cup

Tony Benn, Diary June 7th 1970

Today Brazil beat England in the World Cup: the political impact of this cant be altogether ignored

Tony Benn knew little about football. He grew up in an age when the political classes were not in general football fans (the obsession of the Foot family with Plymouth Argyle being perhaps an exception) leaving it to proletarians.

Unlike David Cameron however Benn did know which team he actually supported, latterly Chesterfield, even if he knew little about its fortunes.

He was however a sharp enough politician to grasp the potential impact of England losing to Brazil in the 1970 World Cup. England at that time were the holders.

Brazil won 1-0

Labour went on to lose the June 1970 General Election despite having been ahead in the polls

With England going through to the last 16 in the 2018 World Cup the possibility of them playing Brazil in the final has increased. Perhaps Theresa May should pay attention to Benn’s warning.
