The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that the decision of Nick Timothy to shave off his trademark organic beard reflects a crisis of identity in the Tory Party.

Mr Timothy stood down as Theresa May’s chief advisor after the General Election in June, but he had become known for his impressive beard before and during the campaign.

His decision to shave is counter-cultural in modern politics where often male politicians grow a beard after leaving office or doing poorly in an election.

The campaigners say that with the Election campaign showing that beards are now a popular image, with veteran beard wearer Jeremy Corbyn increasing the Labour vote, Nick Timothy’s decision to lose his beard sits oddly.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, of course we support the right of individuals to wear or not wear beards as they choose. However Nick Timothy’s beard was iconic. It’s as if W G Grace or Karl Marx had suddenly appeared one day without a beard
