The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard  wearers, has said that aftet Moeen Ali became the first England cricketer with a beard to take a Test Match hat-trick at the Oval on Monday it is time for statistics to be kept on the feats of the ever increasing numbers of hirsute cricketers.

The campaigners say they were surprised to hear on Friday that Test Match Special keeps no such records, particularly with the hirsute heritage of the legendary Bill Frindall and the distinguished beard of current scorer Andrew Sansom.

BLF organiser Keith Flett said, of course a key issue would be whether or not a player actually had a beard. One thinks of the current example of England captain Joe Root. However Jonathan Agnew regularly opines on whether players have beards or not, so he could perhaps be an impartial Beard Umpire, operating of course with agreed guidelines
