London Beard Week- 4th to 11th August to celebrate the Beard Friendly Capital

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said the first ever London Beard Week starts on Friday 4th August

The week is a celebration of hirsute London, now one of the most beard friendly Capital cities in the world, and of London’s great hirsute heritage from Charles Dickens to Karl Marx and Jeremy Corbyn

None of the three iconic beard wearers was born in London. Marx came from Trier, Dickens from Portsmouth and Corbyn originates from Chippenham.

All three found their way to London as a Capital City that welcomed and welcomes the hirsute.

The week also coincides with CAMRA’s Great British Beer Festival at Olympia and the wider London Beer City events because the campaigners say that a rise in the interest of craft beer in London, there are now over 100 breweries within the M25, has also led to a massive increase in beard wearing.

During the week the campaigners will be looking for the public figure, active in London, who can best symbolise the Capital’s historic beard friendly status and on Friday 11th August the first ever Beard of London will be announced.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, the first London Beard Week is a bit of August summertime fun, but it is also designed to draw attention to the important role that beards have played historically and are still playing in the social and economic life of the Capital.
