Haringey trade unionists back march to oppose HDV ‘Regeneration’ plans

Haringey Trades Council, the local section of the TUC in North London has said that it is backing a march on Monday July 3rd from Ducketts Common by Turnpike Lane tube to Haringey Civic Centre to urge Councillors to re-think plans to enter into a partnership with privateer Lendlease for what is termed a ‘regeneration’ project for the Borough- primarily impacting on social housing but extending to other areas as well.

The trade unionists say that after the Grenfell Tower tragedy Councillors must re-think whether it is appropriate to hand responsibility for social housing development in particular to privateers.

Haringey TUC Secretary Keith Flett said, the question that Councillors must ask themselves is whether the Haringey Development Vehicle involving as it does large scale commitment with a private building contractor Lendlease, can be guaranteed to ensure appropriate standards of construction and in particular safety. If it cannot there could be significant political and personal consequences in terms of liability for those who take the decision. In the circumstances a re-think of the strategy is clearly prudent.
Details of the march on July 3rd.
