Campaigners raise questions about DUP’s attitude to facial hair

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has raised questions about the attitude of the Democratic Unionist Party to facial hair and is calling on the Tory Party to clarify the position in current talks about an arrangement at Westminster with the DUP.

The campaigners say that facial hair has not been generally popular in Northern Ireland until quite recent times but nowadays the annual Beard of Ireland poll attracts large numbers of votes. The 2017 winner  was SDLP leader Colum Eastwood.

The BLF notes that the DUP tends to take a very conservative view on social questions and none of its 10 MPs have beards.

The Party has so far failed to respond to BLF requests for it to clarify its position on beards and moustaches although at least one former DUP MLA member Simon Hamilton has a beard.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, we don’t think the Tory Party would want to be linked with pogonophobia so there is a degree of urgency about clarification on the DUP’s position on hirsuteness.
