Fight against pogonophobia to continue as Corbyn battles to be first Prime Minister with a beard since 1902

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that the fight against pogonophobia will continue as Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn fights to be the first Prime Minister with a beard since Lord Salisbury in 1902 after Thursday’s General Election

Several Prime Ministers since 1902 have had facial hair, including moustaches worn by Attlee and Macmillan, but none had a beard. Corbyn offered a one in 115 year chance of there being a PM with a beard by contrast.

Jeremy Corbyn has won the vote for Parliamentary Beard of the Year a record seven times in 2001, 2007, 2001, 2012 (jointly with John Randall) 2014, 2015, 2016.

BLF organiser Keith Flett said, Lord Salisbury was of course a Tory but we don’t think it was only Jeremy Corbyn’s politics that were the central factor in Labour’s advances on 8th June but also his beard power. However there remains much campaigning work to do.
