Corbyn overcomes decades of pogonophobia in TV debate with May

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn could be set to be the first Prime Minister with a beard since Lord Salisbury in 1902 after overcoming decades of pogonophobia, distrust of the hirsute, in a Channel 4 TV debate on Monday.

Jeremy Paxman, who in 2014 described himself as a ‘poster boy for the Beard Liberation Front’ before losing his beard, interviewed Corbyn and Theresa May separately in front of a balanced audience on Channel 4 and Sky on Monday evening.

Mr Corbyn’s beard did not come in for criticism at any time, reflecting a modern appreciation that there is nothing unusual about beards in public life

BLF organiser Keith Flett said, until Mrs Thatcher it was a given that only a clean shaven man in a suit could be Prime Minister. Times have changed and Jeremy Corbyn could be set to be the first hirsute PM for over a century.
