Are Beards Electable?

The last Prime Minister with a beard, Lord Salisbury (1895-1902)

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that an item on BBC News today has raised the spectre of pogonophobia in the Election campaign. The suggestion was that people ‘do not trust’ politicians with beards, an age old trope, that many might think outdated and outmoded in the age of the hipster beard.

The campaigners say that far from not trusting beards, people do not trust most of all clean shaven men in suits, the people who brought us the 2008 banking crisis, and who from Trump to Putin continue to make a mess of the world.

BLF Organiser keith Flett said, we suspect that this is Corbynphobia dressed up as general pogonophobia but the BBC have failed to notice that the world has changed. From my office in the City of London, where once I rarely saw a beard nowadays I see little but beards. We are everywhere.
