CLOSE SHAVE EXPECTED IN BEARD OF IRELAND POLL

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that the result of the Irish Beard of the Year title looks like being a close shave with the vote closing in a week, at midday on March 16th. The 2016 winner was broadcaster William Crawley but he is under serious pressure of being shaved by SDLP leader Colum Eastwood and journalist Sam McBride, with an exceptionally high vote so far in the annual contest.

Eastwood has a ‘two-tone’ style beard which some may see as odd but many regard as stylish, but Crawley and McBride also score highly in the hirsute gravitas and impact area.

The campaigners say that after the snap Assembly election in the North it looks like there is a cross-over to the Beard of Ireland poll particularly with a high turnout so far.

The winner will be announced to mark St Patrick Day on 17th March

The BLF says that while traditionally a land of predominantly clean shaven cultures, Ireland has in recent times become something of a centre for stylish and trendy beards.

Contenders for the title in 2017 include actors, comedians, political activists, journalists and rugby players.

The campaigners say the poll is specifically about the impact the beard of an individual has made in Irish public life and no other factor.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, the lead has changed beard several times this week and while Colum Eastwood is currently ahead the final outcome could still see the leaders splitting hairs
