Haringey trade unionists say Council must be accountable as HDV sell-off is rubber stamped

Haringey TUC the local North London organisation of the TUC has said that it is extremely concerned that after a lengthy meeting of the Council’s Scrutiny meeting last Thursday agreed to refer back plans for the Haringey Development Vehicle, the Council Cabinet met on Tuesday and cursorily dismissed the detailed issues in a 19 minute meeting.

The trade unionists say that while it is understood that Tory Government cuts are starving local Councils of cash, selling off assets to privateers and blacklisters such as the Council’s preferred partner Lendlease is a short term measure that will not benefit ordinary people in Haringey. Privateers are interested in profit and returns for shareholders as a bottom line not the needs of working people to have decent housing and public services

Haringey TUC Secretary Keith Flett said, again we have to express dismay at the way leading Labour Councillors in Haringey are going about Council business. To pass over detailed issues raised by the Scrutiny Committee about the Haringey Development Vehicle in 19 minutes shows a lack of respect for local residents and trade unionists and the serious concerns they have raised about the impact of the HDV on homes and jobs.

Mr Flett continued, the campaign to raise concerns on the HDV sell-off will continue and Councillors need to be clear that they will not avoid democratic accountability for their policies over time. Serious issues require serious answers not dismissive gestures.
