Moeen’s Century set to boost his chances of Beard of the Year poll victory

The Beard Liberation Front the informal network of beard wearers has said that with 9 days to go in the annual vote for Beard of the Year Moeen Ali’s century for England in the first innings of the final Test against India at Chennai looks set to boost his chances of winning.

Moeen has polled respectably so far but is some way off the lead. However this can change quickly if a popular mood gets behind a candidate on the shortlist and Moeen’s century could do just that.

In 2015 Weird Beard brewer Bryan Spooner won the vote.

The campaigners say that the award is specifically not about who has the best or most magnificent beard. Rather it focuses on the beard wearer who has made the most positive hirsute public impact during the year.

With the rise in hirsuteness there is now a longlist poll to prune down the contenders to 10 for the final vote which starts on 25th November. The winner is announced on 29th December.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, we’ve also looked at whether England cricket captain Alastair Cook might make a late run but so far our beard expert on the spot Jonathan Agnew is indicating that the beard may not be sustainable

The poll closes at 6pm on 24th December
