The Beard Liberation Front the informal network of beard wearers has said that it has placed a Moratorium on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn standing for the Parliamentary Beard of the Year Award in 2017 after he recorded a record 7th victory since the annual contest started in 2001 on Friday.

Mirroring his recent re-election as Labour leader the Islington North MP took over half the poll in 2016.

Jeremy Corbyn 63.78%

Chris Elmore 20.22%

Lord Toby Harris 6.4%

The campaigners say that while Jeremy Corbyn has done a huge amount for the image of the political beard, there are now so many beards in Parliament that it is time to see who will carry the Labour Leader’s promotion of the hirsute in Westminster to new political generations.

The moratorium is not a political criticism of the Labour Leader but a reflection of the need to promote a new generation of Parliamentary beard wearers.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, we think it’s time for new growth in the Parliamentary Beard of the Year Award but the moratorium is only temporary. We expect Mr Corbyn to be back in 2018
