Campaigners announce honorary life membership for Hazel Potter
The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has announced a special Award of Honorary Life Membership for Hackney beard lover Hazel Potter.
Ms Potter celebrates her birthday on 5th November.
While the BLF has been active since the mid-1990s, Ms Potter was part of a new wave of north-east London pogonophiles who celebrated diversity of personal appearance including beards from 2010/11.
The campaigners say that Hazel Potter, along with others, prefigured the rise in the hipster beard whose origin is often thought to be in NE London and perhaps particularly Hackney.
She featured, wearing an organic knitted beard, when the Jolly Butchers pub in Stoke Newington first won the Beard Friendly Pub of the Year Award in 2011.
Since then she has been a consistent supporter of the Beard Liberation Front, taking the famous BLF banner abroad on cricket tours with her partner Ian Marriott where it has often featured on Sky TV.
BLF organiser Keith Flett said, Hazel Potter is a great ambassador for beards and we are pleased to announce her honorary life membership of the BLF to coincide with her latest birthday.
