Dylan accepts Nobel Prize for Literature: has he sold out again?

According to a BBC Report after a period of silence Bob Dylan has decided to accept the recent Award of the Nobel Prize for Literature and may appear at the Award ceremony in Stockholm in December.

The Award was announced on 13th October and Dylan’s silence sparked speculation that his refusal to acknowledge it was a matter of taking a principled stand.

If it was Dylan has changed his mind but he remains an enigma. He was first accused of ‘selling out’ when he went electric in 1966, a move he subsequently seems to have had some concerns about as in more recent years he has returned to American roots music.

Dylan has also been accused of selling out for a range of reasons more recently to do with advertising campaigns.

The latest move does provoke the question of whether Dylan has ‘sold out’ again or whether he sees the idea of the ‘sell out’ as a way of confounding fans and critics alike, a statement of our times.
