There is perhaps something a little odd writing about 30 years of The Independent (7th October 1986) while in Manchester home of The Guardian. That paper still publishes in print unlike the Indy.
I doubt that many will note the 30th anniversary-its on the front page of today’s Independent on the web- because you wont see the paper in a newsagent or being read in a pub.
Like many I get much of my news and comment on line but I dont eschew the hard copy.
The Independent was never a paper of the left (formed by ex-Telegraph journalists after all) but its refusal to cover Royal trivia as news marked it out.
Successive changes of ownership destroyed its independence such as it was but its a pity it isnt around in print after 30 years. Our public culture is a little poorer as a result
