As Wiggins wins again, beards a key to Olympic success in Rio

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that after Sir Bradley Wiggins and his co-cyclists at the Rio Olympics won gold for a third time, facial hair is a key to success at the Games.

The organisers on the official website agree.

The Olympics has seen some famously hirsute medal winners including Mark Spritz in 1972 and Daley Thompson in 1984.

In Rio the beard is a major feature. The Beard Liberation Front has noted the performances of some hirsute athletes

Dan Craven, Namibia, road race

Rhys Howden, Australia, water polo

William Satch, UK, rower

Louis Smith, UK, gymnast

Katsuyuki Tanamura, Japan, swimmer

Michael Tinsley, USA, hurdler

Sir Bradley Wiggins- UK, cyclist

Beard Liberation Front organiser Keith Flett said, beards are a key feature in Rio. They add gravitas to athlete’s performances and in many cases also provide an aero-dynamic advantage
