Labour went into the June 1970 General Election favourites to win under Harold Wilson who had won Elections in 1964 and 1966.

Tony Benn wrote in his Diary (15th June 1970) that Heath had concentrated on ‘prices and the economic situation- and although he has been bitterly attacked by the press for his failure and scorned by Harold and the rest of us, he has his two themes’

The Election result was as follows:

Conservatives 330 seats (46.4%)

Labour 268 seats (43.1%)

Liberals 6 seats (7.5%)
