The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that  with the 2016 Beards, Shorts and Sandals season at its peak, it has reviewed its policy on wearing socks with sandals.

Generally the socks and sandals combo is regarded as a fashion faux pas and voting in a BLF poll (below) continues to reflect this.

However there is a growing minority, led by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who are leading a new fashion trend for socks and sandals.

The Labour leader is often pictured wearing a socks and sandals combo

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said If beards and shorts and sandals are worn in busy City streets care should be taken to have robust sandals and sock wearing may not be not just prudent but fashionable in an urban environment. We can confirm that Jeremy Corbyn has BLF permission to wear socks because of the real and present danger that hostile forces may try to tread on his sandals.

  • The normally well-informed Keith Flett (Letters, 26 July) has obviously not been reading the Guardian fashion columns. Socks with sandals are OK for men in 2016 (Report, 6 May).
