Haringey trade unionists welcome Corbyn on Ballot but urge focus on fight against Tories

Haringey TUC has welcomed the news that following a Labour NEC vote Jeremy Corbyn will be on the ballot for the Labour leadership which he was overwhelmingly elected to last September.

Corbyn who started his political career in Haringey in the 1970s has long been a friend to the Trades Council.

The trade unionists say that it is clear that unions with a major presence in the Borough such as UNISON, UNITE and the CWU are backing Corbyn.

However they caution that a Labour leadership election is not an end in itself. Rather with a new Tory Prime Minister Theresa May there must be a renewed focus on opposing Tory measures

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, parts of Haringey have the highest jobless in London, there is significant poverty and unaffordable housing. Trade Unionists look to Labour to give a lead in grappling with these issues, leadership contest or not.
