Sidney Webb (1918) on his view of what the Labour Party should be

In 1918 Sidney Webb was one of the main architects of a new Labour Party Constitution. It has been changed in more recent times but still a century on provides a useful framework for understanding what the Party is.

In a Labour Party leaflet Webb wrote about the Constitution, he concluded:

‘it is, for the Labour Party not a matter of winning the next or any particular election. The Labour Party is today, without doubt, the party of inspiration and promise’
