Campaigners say Stephen Crabb may have been forced out of Tory leader race by pogonophobia

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that Stephen Crabb, who has dropped out of the Tory leadership race after the first ballot may been forced to quit by pogonophobia.

Crabb who scored 34 votes in the first round, is the first Tory Cabinet Minister with a beard for over a century. There has not been a hirsute Tory Prime Minister since Lord Salisbury in 1902.

The campaigners say that Crabb may have paid a heavy price for his beard in the contest but back his principled decision to keep it in place.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, It would have been mould breaking to see Stephen Crabb face Jeremy Corbyn at Prime Minister’s Questions but it looks like the fight on prejudice against facial hair in politics has a way to go yet
