Campaigners say Paul Flynn is first ever Shadow Welsh Secretary with a Beard

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, welcomed the news that veteran Newport West MP Paul Flynn has been appointed today as Shadow Welsh Secretary.

Flynn is the first ever man with a beard to fulfil the Shadow role while current Tory leadership contender Stephen Crabb was the first ever hirsute Welsh Secretary.

While Jim Griffiths was the first Welsh Secretary in Harold Wilson’s 1964 Labour Government* the official Shadow post seems to have only appeared in 1975 when Mrs Thatcher became Tory leader. Then Nicholas Edwards (Lord Crickhowell) took the role.

The two MPs have argued about beard related matters with Flynn describing Crabb in a Commons debate as having ‘a pathetic starter beard’.

Paul Flynn is a frequent contender for the Beard Liberation Front’s Beard of Wales title on St David’s Day though he has yet to win it. The current holder is Wales and Crystal Palace footballer Joe Ledley.

A poll this week has found that 62% of men in Cardiff now wear beards so Flynn is fully in tune with the hipster zeitgeist at 81.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, Paul Flynn is one of the longest serving and most distinguished hirsute Parliamentarians. We welcome his appointment as Shadow Welsh Secretary and hope his beard power can promote Welsh interests
