Haringey trade unionists say Labour must focus on fighting austerity & racism

Haringey Trades Council has said that after the Brexit vote last week Labour must join trade unions in leading the fight against austerity economics and racism.

The trade unionists say that most major unions view believe that a Labour leadership contest at this time is an indulgence, notwithstanding that it is clearly vital that if there is an early General Election Labour is in a position to win it.

Current Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has his roots in Haringey trade union and Labour politics and has been a good friend of the Trades Council over many decades, and if there are those who want to challenge him for Labour leader the trade unionists say they need to explain their perspective for post-Brexit politics

Haringey TUC Secretary Keith Flett said, it is clear that some Labour MPs are unhappy with Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership. It is much less clear that this is the case amongst trade unionists who would prefer a focus on fighting the impact of austerity on jobs and livelihoods and opposing a very concerning upsurge in racism. We would underline that for those who want to see a different Labour leader it is imperative they make very clear how they plan to address these issues.
