What police told Tony Benn after death threats in 1975 Referendum campaign

Tony Benn in his Diaries for the 1975 Referendum which took place in early June noted receiving death threats and met with Special Branch about these. They felt that murder was unlikely but ‘there may be a risk of you getting biffed’.

41 years on, sadly, the murder of an MP in a Referendum campaign did occur. The threat of fascist violence is ever present.
