Tottenham remains top of London jobless league-thanks to austerity

Haringey TUC, the local wing of the TUC in North London, has said that the disappointing news from the May 2016 employment figures released on 15 June is that Tottenham retains its unwanted position at the top of the London jobless league.

The numbers on benefits dropped slightly from 3,140 in April to 3,125 in May but this still represents 3.2% of the workforce. No other London constituency has over 3% unemployment.

The trade unionists say that while much current political discussion is about the EU, the failure to address employment issues in the area has much more to do with the long running Government austerity programme than it has with staying or leaving the EU.

The reality is that public sector jobs continue to be lost and despite the best efforts of Haringey Council to promote investment in the area not enough new jobs in the private sector are being created.

Haringey TUC Secretary Keith Flett said, it could be argued that in the longer term it would be easier to shift from an austerity agenda outside of the EU, but in the here and now real people’s lives are being ruined by the lack of a decent job. That is issue that needs to be addressed now too.
