W.G Grace shaves Moeen Ali in Best England cricket beard of all time poll as Bairstow pays tribute

With the conclusion of the first part of the summer Test season, and the fielding of the most hirsute England cricket team since the 1970s, the Beard Liberation Front has announced the results of its poll for the best England cricket beard of all time.

W.G Grace 52%

Moeen Ali 36%

Graeme Fowler 8%

The BLF identified three hirsute periods of English cricket:

The Classic, Victorian era. W G Grace is the iconic figure here

The 1970s: the long clean shaven period of English cricket ended with the advent of players like Ian Botham and Mike Gatting, as a new less formal period of cricket etiquette opened up

The modern era from 2000: Beards are becoming an essential part of an England cricketer’s game from Jonny Bairstow to Moeen Ali

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, It seems appropriate to announce that W.G Grace has won the Best England Cricket Beard of all time poll on the Friday of a Lords Test. A statue of W.G. magnificently hirsute is a well-known feature of ‘the Home of Cricket’ and of course Old Father Time’s beard presides over all’. Jonny Bairstow’s century was clearly in part a tribute to W.G.
