Haringey TUC, the North London wing, of the Trades Union Congress, has issued a reminder of the need to register to vote by June 7th for the EU Referendum on June 23rd.

The trade unionists say that they are not taking a view on the Referendum as a Trades Council. The TUC has highlighted the importance of employment rights in EU law which a ‘Brexit’ could put at risk and many unions such as UNISON, UNITE and the GMB support a ‘yes’ vote. Others however are concerned about the EU as a neo-liberal institution that can block progressive economic change as happened in Greece in 2015. Unions supporting this position are urging a ‘no’ vote and these include ASLEF, RMT and the Bakers Union.

With a population that is more than usually transient the numbers registered to vote in Haringey are thought to have fallen with the new method of individual registration. The trade unionists say that if people did not vote in May for the London Mayor they should check if they are registered to vote in the Referendum.

Haringey TUC Secretary Keith Flett said, the right to vote and decide important issues like Britain’s future in Europe democratically was hard won by the Chartists and the Suffragettes. It will be no good finding out you don’t have a vote on June 23rd. Now is the time to check and if need be register.
