Haringey Trades Council has urged trade unionists to make sure they turn out to vote in the 5th May elections for the London Mayor and Assembly.

The campaign has been disfigured by suggestions by Tory candidate Zac Goldsmith that his Labour opponent Sadiq Khan has alleged links to terrorism.

The trade unionists say that many will vote Labour, while others may prefer the Greens Sian Berry or Respect’s George Galloway, perhaps particularly for the Mayoral second preference. However one of the key things on Thursday is to reject the politics of Islamophobia and stand for a united London. That means turning out to vote in elections which have not attracted as high a turnout as their importance warrants in the past.

Haringey TUC Secretary Keith Flett said, I personally think that while trade unionists will certainly have disagreements with him, having Sadiq Khan as the first Muslim Mayor of a major European capital would underline that the real London is about diversity and tolerance and not the dog whistle politics of division.
