The Beard Liberation Front, the network of beard wearers that campaigns against beardism, irrational prejudice against the hirsute, has said that veteran Labour politician Lord Falconer has won the coveted Beard of Spring 2016 Award after an on-line poll.

England cricketer Moeen Ali was second and comedian and author Alexei Sayle took third place

Lord Falconer was previously associated with the clean shaven revisionism of the New Labour era but in an recent interview with Total Politics he suggested that his beard is in line with trends in the country as a whole towards greater hirsuteness

The Award, one of four seasonal hirsute accolades that leads to the Beard of the Year in December, celebrates the coming of Spring and the growth of beards new and old.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said Lord Falconer’s victory reflects the changing face of politics. With Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader and Stephen Crabb as DWP Secretary hirsuteness is making more impact in politics than for more than a century.

  1. So who are you backing for Mayor of London? As far as I know the only hirsute candidate is Glloway. Will you support him or will you find some tortuous reason for not doing so?

  2. The BLF rarely backs candidates but as with previous London Mayoral elections will press candidates on how beard friendly they are. Galloway may score well here but its not guaranteex
