Hirsute Campaigners urge Stephen Crabb to keep his beard

4th Earl of Onslow

The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, which campaigns against beardism, irrational prejudice against the hirsute, has urged new DWP Secretary Stephen Crabb, the first hirsute Tory Cabinet member for more than a century, to keep his beard despite pressure to shave it in the new high profile role.

The last Conservative Cabinet Minister was the William Onslow, the 4th Earl (1861-1911) who served as President of the Board of Agriculture in Arthur Balfour’s Government until it fell in 1905

Mr Crabb’s beard has been the subject of some comment, fellow Welsh MP Paul Flynn called it a ‘pathetic starter beard’ in the House of Commons in March.

However the campaigners welcome the increased profile Crabb’s new role will bring to the hirsute on the national political stage and say it is imperative that he keeps his trade mark beard

BLF organiser Keith Flett said, Mr Crabb’s record has already come under some criticism, but the critics he particularly needs to shun are those who are urging him to become just another clean shaven politician in a suit.
