The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, has said that Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has won the Parliamentary Beard of the Year Award for a record 6th time by a whisker from SNP MP Stewart McDonald.

When the poll closed at 6pm on Thursday Corbyn had 41% of the votes to McDonald’s 39%. The SNP MP had been ahead for much of the poll but a late surge of Corbyn support just took him over the line

Tory Cabinet Minister Stephen Crabb was third.

There was  record turn-out with almost 3,000 votes cast a 200% increase on last year.

The on-line vote focused on hirsute MPs whose beard has made the most political impact in 2015. The winner announced on 11th December.

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, Jeremy Corbyn has shown the tenacity to hang on to his title by a whisker but full marks to Stewart McDonald who gave the leader a very close shave and must anticipate winning the Award in years to come.
