EP Thompson & Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour leadership bid

In Uncategorized on July 12, 2015 by kmflett

E.P. Thompson the socialist historian and activist died in 1993 so he obviously had no direct comment on Jeremy Corbyn’s bid for the Labour leadership.

With the ballot for the second Labour leadership election ending and the result due on 24th September we can expect a tsunami of media comment on why Corbyn while he may be elected by Labour members and supporters is unelectable

Thompson’s words from The New Reasoner 5, 1958 do have relevance now:

the left-wing socialist in Britain is accused of “Utopian pipe-dreams” and told that “the voters won’t wear it.”

Thompson never had a beard, although he did like cats. Neither of these points however is of central importance here. What is of note is that Thompson through his historical research  and peace activism became one of the most well known and influential public figures of the post-1945 era despite or perhaps because of being a ‘left-wing socialist’.
