The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers has said that the 2011 Beard of the Year Award has received record interest, with the most votes recorded for the winner writer and restaurant critic Jay Rayner of any winning beard since the inception of the Award in 1995

Actor Brian Blessed and Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams were second and third placed.

The shortlist was determined by nominations from BLF supporters and members but votes from the public were encouraged via Twitter.

The campaign group which opposes beardism, irrational prejudice against the hirsute, says that as usual the Award focuses on those in the public eye whose beards have created a positive image during the year

BLF Organiser Keith Flett said, perhaps it is a revolt against a clean shaven political establishment, perhaps people cant afford to shave in these recessionary times. Whatever it is the record interest in Beard of the Year underlines that beards are set to be big in 2011
