TOTTENHAM TRADE UNIONISTS CRITICISE DAVID LAMMY ON ‘SMACKING’
Haringey Trades Union Council the local wing of the TUC that covers Tottenham has said that local MP David Lammy’s call for a return of the legal right for parents to smack children in the Mail on Sunday places an unfortunate emphasis on what is a serious issue.

The trade unionists say that the MPs call undoubtedly reflects serious issues and concerns in London and deserves to be fully debated but it is not the best way to address matters.

Haringey TUC says that with Tottenham having the highest unemployment in London and swingeing Government inspired cuts to youth services the real issue must be investment and an end to cuts to provide hope for young people
Haringey TUC Secretary Keith Flett said Who could doubt that discipline and self discipline are important for young people and here David Lammy is right. The issue is how an environment is created that will provide this. We don’t think smacking children or not smacking them is likely to make a significant difference here. What will is making sure that people growing up now have a positive future to relate to and engage with
