We Need a United Fight Against the Cuts
The Tories have no Councillors in Haringey and very little prospect of getting any either.
Just as in the 1980s when their economic policies finished off manufacturing industry in the Borough and caused social unrest with 15% unemployment , 30 years on the heirs of Thatcher are coming again for ordinary people in Haringey.
This time it is our public services and jobs they are going for.
How can we fight?
The strategies deployed to fight Tories cuts in the 1980s didn’t work.
The ‘dented shield’ means Labour makes cuts in order to avoid the Tories moving in and making worse ones, which is what would happen if the Councillors refused to cut.
There are two problems. The first is that if it is your service or your job that is cut how is it possible to tell the difference between a Tory and a Labour cut? It isn’t. The second is that instead of the Tories rightfully getting the blame for the cuts they have ordered, Labour is in the firing line.
Hypocritical LibDem Councillors play this game. Their party is part of the Government that is making the cuts. Yet in Haringey they have the audacity to say Labour is to blame for the cuts the Con-Dems have ordered. Quite amazing!
Trade Unionists have long argued that cuts should be resisted. But that is not an end in itself or an easy alternative to the dented shield.
MARCH FOR AN ALTERNATIVE ON MARCH 26th
Resisting the cuts only makes sense if we build a massive united and broad movement to oppose them and sweep this vicious but weak Government from Office.
In doing that we can welcome ALL that oppose cuts in principle.
We need a massive turn-out from Haringey on the TUC march for the Alternative on March 26th. We need to stand united in our determination to stop the Government’s cuts.
